After a hard fought one point loss on opening night against St. Joes, the men's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of the DAC for their home opener on Wednesday evening. Drexel will be looking for its first victory of the year when it takes on reigning Big South Conference champion High Point, who is fresh off a twenty-four point victory against N.C. Wesleyan, a Division III school. In its only D-I game of the year, High Point dropped a four point decision at Texas Tech.
High Point made it a game with Texas Tech largely by living large on the perimeter where they made 10 of 18 three point attempts (56%). The game was a very sloppy one overall with both teams notching a ton of turnovers, including a full 76ers' half's worth (16, or was it 17? too depressing to remember) for the Panthers. Like the Dragons, High Point was in a good deal of foul trouble throughout the game. Let's hope tomorrow's officials ease up on the foul calls.
This game should be one where Drexel has a pronounced advantage in the low post. The Dragons are generally bigger down low where the Panthers have just one player at 6'8" or bigger (fourth leading scorer John Brown) and have the ability and athleticism (and depth!) to defend the perimeter well. Drexel's forwards need to avoid the grave foul trouble they found themselves in last game, as it's tough to defend well from the bench.
We hope to see you out at the game tomorrow night, go Dragons!
