Previous Rule: A one and one was awarded with the seventh team foul in a half, two shots were awarded at the tenth and all subsequent fouls in a half
New Rule: Two free throws will be awarded on the fifth foul of each quarter
Previous Rule: Team fouls reset after each half, including before overtime
New Rule: Team fouls reset after each quarter but do not reset after the fourth quarter
Previous Rule: No advancement took place at any point in the game after a time out
New Rule: With less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter and overtime, a time out after a made basketball, rebound, or change in possession will advance the ball to the frontcourt. The NCAA states that the change will make these final possessions "more exciting".
10 Second Backcourt Exceptions
Previous Rule: No exceptions, a new 10 second clock would be awarded due to a jump ball, offensive technical foul, or a ball deflected out of bounds.
New Rule: No new 10 second clock will be awarded for these scenarios. The 10 second clock will continue from the point of stoppage.
There are several other rule changes for the upcoming season as well. Post defenders are now allowed to place a forearm or hand on the elbow of a back to the basket offensive player. And this one is for the Drexel Pep Band... music is now allowed to be played at all dead ball moments, music was previously limited to timeouts only.
Several rule changes will be voted on in the summer that could changes rules for the 2016-17 season, one of which includes a reduction in the number of media timeouts per game.
